Vestige I - Mixed Media Acrylic Painting

Vestige I functions as the central excavation point within the Vestiges collection — a surface that appears unearthed rather than constructed.

Built through layered acrylic, cement, sand, jute, and embedded stone, the work evokes the exposed remains of a fractured structure emerging through erosion, collapse, and geological pressure. The dense accumulation of material, suspended fibers, and mineral textures creates the sensation of an artifact partially revealed through time and sedimentation.

As the surface unfolds, the accumulation of stone and fractured material begins to suggest the emergence of a buried human presence suspended within the terrain itself. Rather than presenting a literal figure, the work allows the impression of a face to surface gradually through erosion and material density — as if memory or identity is being excavated from beneath the surface.

Unlike a traditional painted composition, Vestige I behaves like excavated terrain: unstable, weathered, and physically scarred. Embedded stones disperse beyond the central mass as though fragments are separating from the structure itself, reinforcing the tension between preservation and disappearance.

The restrained palette of ash, limestone, charcoal, dust, and earth tones heightens the archaeological atmosphere while allowing texture, erosion, and material presence to dominate the experience.
